An Early Spring
Winter is half over — the coming of spring and growing
light hold promise for everyone who loves the Earth, wildness,
wholeness, connection, and peace. Yet at the same time, the
mild Northwest winter and too-early daffodils elicit a hybrid
response of bright delight shadowed with gray concern. The
reality of climate change is establishing itself firmly in
both our awareness and our gardens.
“Never have creative, human-scale,
visionary responses been so urgently called for
from the grassroots.”

Spring blossoms showing up in early February confirm the
paradox–welcome signs of beauty and renewal, clearly
showing up on a new, uncharted schedule.
Change is in the wind
Scientific data presented in January and February makes the
irrefutable case that the climate changes globally will be
more dramatic and more disruptive than previously understood.
Reports confirm
that human activity is driving the change.
This much is sure: we live in wild times. Instability, upheaval,
and sudden shifts seem to be the defining characteristics
of our day. Politically, culturally, and environmentally
we will face unprecedented tests in the coming decade.
Now is the time…
The needs and the possibilities
unfolding are boundless. Never have creative, human-scale,
visionary responses been so urgently called for from the
grassroots.
We, the people of the world, must lead the way if we hope
that solutions from political, economic, and international
institutions will follow. Our task more than ever is to commit
to nourishing our intelligence, skills, creativity, insight,
and spirit so we can bring our best selves to the work ahead.
What lies ahead
Living Earth’s schedule in the
coming months offers opportunities to connect in community,
to exchange ideas and gather information, to hone our skills,
to celebrate our love of life, and to reflect on our role
in the world, as individuals, as a community, and as a society.
Please join us. Get involved in
our programs, sign up to volunteer, and send a contribution. Support
a program or support our operations — just get involved.
Living Earth members are the heart of our work. Your support
and participation build our circle, strengthen our programs,
and add clarity and beauty to our voice. And strength, clarity,
and beauty are what the world needs right now!
