American democracy is in crisis, and nothing short of a full-hearted grassroots commitment and an infusion of ideas, energy, and action will give it new life. We are at a critical point in our nation's history, and we know that democracy cannot be imposed, and it can't be handed down "from the top." Creating democracy is up to us.

We invite—no, we urge—you to bring your ideas, questions, experience, and concerns to contribute to this first in a series of Living Earth dialogues to fuel the ideas, the vision, and the actions needed to build dynamic, participatory democracy in our communities and our nation.

Facilitated discussions help maintain focus

Participants will join in facilitated conversations to share their issues and concerns, and brainstorm possibilities for change. We will share our concerns about the institutions and systems that are currently expected provide democratic structure to our society. We will hear from each other how different demographic groups are impacted by our current system.

Using lively open space discussions and facilitated processes, participants will explore the elements of our common vision and identify steps we need to take toward creating justice and economic security for all, environmental sustainability, and the reality of peace in our communities and the world.

Possible questions (feel free to bring your own!)

  • What do you see as flawed, or not working, under our current systems and institutions?
  • What are the unexplored possibilities of creating real democracy?
  • How can we honor the voices of minority and under-represented groups?
  • How do we get there from here?

Objectives

  • Identify common obstacles to realizing "true" democracy.
  • Broaden public participation in creating a fully democratic society;
  • Recognize "We, the people" as an empowered sovereign body.
  • Define and accept the responsibilities implied in our power.
  • Envision democratic structures and institutions that can serve as the foundation for greater social and economic justice, environmental responsibility, and peace.
