Joanna Macy and Living Earth
at Breitenbush Hot Springs

Internationally renowned earth-activist, Buddhist scholar, and author Joanna Macy will conduct a summer retreat with Living Earth at Breitenbush Hot Springs in Detroit, Oregon, from Sunday July 10 through Saturday afternoon, July 16, 2005.

"The most remarkable feature of this historical moment," writes Joanna , "is not that we are on the way to destroying our world--we've actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are starting to wake up, as from a millennia-long sleep, to a whole new relationship to our world, ourselves, and each other. This is the great and necessary adventure of our time."

Our week together is to help us understand this adventure, and recognize our own distinctive roles in the healing of our world. Drawing on spiritual teachings, we will face the grief we carry in these tough times, and see it as living proof of our mutual belonging, and an integral part of humanity's awakening.

Drawing on systems theory, we will see how self-organizing systems use adversity to
generate new collaborative capacities and forms. Through the interactive exercises that Joanna has developed over three decades of her work, new dimensions of our courage and creativity will be revealed to us. And we will also take home an experience of community to enliven us through the days and years to come.

Nestled amid old growth forests on the sparkling Breitenbush River, this worker-owned retreat center offers natural hot springs pools and sauna, a medicine wheel of hot tubs, workshop and sanctuary spaces, scrumptious organic vegetarian meals, tent and cabin accomodations. Renowned for the earth ethic that infuses all aspects of Breitenbush, they also offer a rich menu of bodywork, self-care programs, and retreat services.

Cost of the July 10-16 retreat is $395 plus Breitenbush lodging (or $370 before May 1, plus lodging). Lodging rates for six nights vary depending on accommodations: $281 for camping (your tent); $341 for lodge dorm or Breitenbush tent; $461 for a shared cabin w/o private toilet; $551 for cabin with toilet and sink.
