On the eve of the second anniversary of the US invasion of
Iraq, Living Earth is presenting public forum on conscientious
objection and opposition to war—to the American war
on Iraq and to war as a strategy, as a foreign policy, and
as a means to achieve political and nationalistic ends.
Portland author Kim Stafford will share writings of Oregon's
beloved poet laureate William Stafford on the subject of
conscientious objection to war. Combat veterans, conscientious
objectors, and families who have lost loved ones in war will
be on hand to share the journey that has shaped their moral
opposition to war.
To shift out of the escalating expansion of military actions,
we must face the deep moral dimensions of war and our willingness
to expend vast wealth and human life in this barbaric and
brutalizing practice. As we re-assess our personal and societal
commitment to peace we can begin the hard work of developing
a full range of pro-active, creative, non-militaristic responses
to geopolitical crises.
