Ty Burhoe

On September 12, Living Earth will host an amazing concert of classical northern Indian music with acclaimed tabla player Ty Burhoe and sitar player Shubhendra Rao, protégé of Ravi Shankar. Our connection with Ty threads back through our shared relationships with Ram Dass and Krishna Das, and it is an honor and a joy to have these exceptional musicians bring the beauty, passion, and scope of their artistry to our community in Portland.

Ty Burhoe has been a devoted student of tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain since 1990, and has received accolades for his mastery of Indian classical music and his creative collaborations that combine tabla with European classical music, jazz, and folk music.

Ty teaches tabla and performs with artists including Krishna Das, Curandero (Miguel Espinoza), Ustad Sultan Khan, Nawang Khechog, Walter Becker, Yoshio Kurihashi, and many, many others.

Shubhendra Rao

Shubhendra Rao began his musical immersion with Pandit Ravi Shankar at age eight, after beginning study with his father at age three.

Shubhendra spent two decades in intense, intimate study with his guru and from this deep foundation has explored music from many cultures, developing a unique musical identity that is contemplative, brilliant, joyful, and profoundly creative.

Shubhendra performs at international festivals and venues, and continually experiments with new musical idioms, exploring the boundaries of cultures and traditions. He lives in New Delhi with his wife Saskia Rao-de Haas and their three-year old son where he continues his musical collaborations and creativity, and also teaches.
