How we work

Branches of the Tree

Like all organic form, Living Earth is changing as new ways to serve our mission emerge. More and more folks are active in making programs and events happen, and familiar activities are morphing into new patterns. This new form we see unfolding is like a tree with sturdy branches, new twigs, and bright blossoms growing from its roots and trunk.

Part of our mission is to empower full-hearted action and activism, and this tree will help us do that. With this more cooperative, collective model, Living Earth will become a richer resource for our members and the greater community. Here's how it will look:

The deep roots of our tree are Living Earth's mission, vision, values, and principles — the source and basis of everything we do.

The trunk of the tree is the Community Council — our engaged volunteers, members, and donors, with the board embedded at the center, the Heartwood. This living trunk is the tangible structure responsible for Living Earth's activities.

The branches of the tree are all our activities — lectures, workshops, gatherings, action projects, celebrations, and much, much more.

Up to now, virtually all Living Earth activities have originated from the Heartwood (board/council), with volunteer support as a key to their success. Now, the majority of Living Earth activities — branches on the tree — will be generated by volunteers, members, and our extended community, and supported by Living Earth. Here is how those Living Earth branches will look:

  • Community Branches & BlossomsThese are short-term, small-budget projects envisioned and developed by members of our community. Living Earth's role will be to offer a supporting structure to help bring those ideas to success. If you have a project, event, action, or a gathering you wish could happen, let us know. Maybe it can be a branch or blossom on Living Earth's tree.
  • Partner Branches Living Earth will be a partner on certain programs and projects that are more independently developed and managed by members or other allies in the community. Partner Branch programs will be win-win endeavors that strengthen the project itself, enhance Living Earth's outreach and relations in the larger community, and further our mission.
  • Integral Branches Certain programs and activities will continue to be initiated and developed primarily from the heartwood (board and council). These recurring or ongoing activities are central to how we accomplish our mission, integral branches on the Living Earth tree.

For more information and a project proposal template, let us hear from you. We're excited to be expanding our service to the community in this way and look forward to supporting a range of activities.
